O/R: Energy Ministry Delegation Visits Krachi-East to Advance Compensation for Akosombo Flood Victims
A delegation from the Compensation Disbursement Unit at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has paid a working visit to the Oti Region, specifically the Krachi-East Municipality, as part of ongoing efforts by government to compensate victims affected by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage floods.
The team was hosted by the Oti Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Dzre Foster, where they held a productive meeting with key stakeholders to discuss the steps being taken by government under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama to provide relief and compensation to affected communities.
The meeting brought together all Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) within the Oti Region as well as NADMO Directors from jurisdictions that were affected by the flooding. Discussions focused not only on the compensation framework for victims but also explored practical measures and policy interventions that could help prevent similar disasters in the future.
Participants emphasized the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness systems, improving early warning mechanisms, and enhancing collaboration among government institutions to safeguard communities located along river basins and flood-prone areas.
Following the meeting, the Municipal NADMO Director for Krachi-East, Mr. Dzunu Jonathan, led the delegation on a field visit to Dambai Lakeside, a community within the regional capital that was severely affected by the flood.
During the visit, members of the delegation witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the spillage, including collapsed buildings, ruined structures, and farmlands that remain submerged as a result of the floods. The team interacted with local officials and community members to better appreciate the extent of the destruction and the urgent need for support.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Dzunu Jonathan noted that the planned compensation initiative would bring significant relief to affected residents, particularly those whose homes, farms, and livelihoods were severely impacted by the disaster.
He further expressed optimism that the government’s intervention would help restore hope among victims who continue to grapple with the aftermath of the flooding.
Mr. Dzunu also used the opportunity to commend stakeholders and partners who have supported disaster response efforts within the municipality and across the country. He acknowledged the contributions of institutions, organizations, and individuals who have worked alongside NADMO to provide assistance to affected communities.
The visit forms part of broader government efforts to assess the impact of the Akosombo Dam spillage and ensure that victims receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives while also strengthening strategies to mitigate future disasters.
