Organized Labour directs its unions and members to embark on strike

All the Unions that made up Trade Union Congress Ghana (TUC) have signed to back the strike action announced by the Congress over “blatant disrespect and willful disregard for workers’ rights.”
In an official notice signed on behalf of the General Secretary by Dr. Yaw Baaah dated 26th June 2023, the notice stated that
“On March 2, 2023, Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited terminated the appointments of three local union leaders including the Chairman, Secretary, and Assistant Secretary of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of Trades Union Congress (Ghana) for joining a trade union and leading the union at the enterprise level.
The notice was copied to
Hon. Ministers for the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, Energy, National Security, and All Organised Labour Groups.
Organized Labour stated in the notice that they find the actions of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited as a violation of the fundamental rights of the workers guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) as well as the International Labour Organization Conventions 87 and 98 which are ratified by Ghana.
The notice also has it that Organized Labour also views the blatant disrespect and willful disregard for workers’ rights by Sunon Asogi Power (Ghana) Limited as not only a threat to workers in the company but a threat to all the working people of Ghana.
Organized Labour in the notice said “At a leadership meeting held on Monday, June 26, 2023 at the TUC Conference Room in Accra resolved to embark on a nationwide strike from Monday, July 10, 2023, until the three local union leaders are reinstated by the Company.
By the said disclosed decision, Organized Labour of Ghana directs all labour unions and their members across the country to stay home beginning Monday, July 10, 2023, until further notice.
