Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has resigned as Majority Leader

In a surprising development, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has chosen to step down from his position with immediate effect.

The decision was made public during a crucial meeting of the Majority Group held on Wednesday evening, February 21, at the banquet hall of the Jubilee House in Accra. The meeting was called by President Akufo-Addo himself.

According to reports from 3news.com’s presidential correspondent, Nana Aduah, the purpose of the meeting was to address the escalating tensions within the caucus regarding the proposed reshuffling of their front bench in Parliament.

There are conflicting opinions within the caucus, with one faction advocating for a change in leadership and another arguing for the retention of the current leadership.

Supporters of the leadership change assert that Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will not be returning to Parliament in 2025. Therefore, they believe that his deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, should assume the role of Majority Leader to ensure a seamless transition in the next government.

However, it should be noted that on February 20, a group of NPP MPs led by 1st Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu expressed their satisfaction with the current leadership under Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and warned against any changes.

The purpose of the meeting is to reach a consensus on the best way forward in light of these differing views.

With Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation, the path is now open for a potential smooth transition in the caucus leadership.

According to the current arrangement, Alexander Afenyo-Markin is expected to assume the role of Majority Leader, pending official communication from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
