PAC demands arrest of Northern Regional Director for National Sports Authority over misuse of Gh¢160,000

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has demanded the immediate arrest of the Northern Regional Director for the National Sports Authority (NSA).

This demand stems from the Director’s refusal to deposit over Gh¢160,000 of Internally Generated Funds (IGF) into the designated Consolidated Fund Transit account, as mandated by the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019. The 2022 Auditor-General’s report revealed this contravention by the Sports Authority’s Northern Regional Management.

Therefore, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, James Klutse Avedzi, has issued an order for the Regional Director and the region’s accountant to be apprehended by the police.

Their failure to appear before Parliament to provide an explanation regarding the situation has raised concerns. Mr. Avedzi expressed his dissatisfaction with their absence, highlighting the alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to over GH¢160,000 and their perceived attempt to evade accountability.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) constitutes a maximum of twenty-five (25) members and is led by a chairperson who does not belong to the governing party in charge of the Executive branch of the government.

The committee is entrusted with the responsibility of examining and auditing accounts presented by the Auditor-General of Ghana, which detail the allocation and utilization of funds approved by Parliament to meet the government’s public expenditure.
