A section of the Ghanaians especially the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ministers Designate, bigwigs in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) among others for disregarding the Covid-19 safety protocols announced by the President, at a one week memorial service of one of their own.
During President Akufo-Addo’s update No. 23 on Sunday, 31st January, 2021 on measures taken against spread of Coronavirus in Ghana, he has reintroduced restrictions on funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances, and parties. According to the President, private burials, with not more than twenty-five (25) people can take place, with the enforcement of the social distancing, hygiene and mask wearing protocols.
The reintroduction of the said restrictions came as a worrying situation to many Ghanaians at the time, but they have no option than to comply in order to help curb the increasing rate of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
Some believe that, to effectively and properly manage the covid-19 cases in the country, there’s a need for good leadership and governance to the Ghanaian citizenry. According to many Ghanaian social media users, govermment official are not exhibiting these leadership credentials to serve as a role model to many citizens.
According to some Ghanaians, while the public is being restricted from organizing funerals with large number of people in attendance to enforce the Covid-19 safety protocols, the President, his Vice President and other bigwigs in NPP have massed-up at the funeral ground of one of their owns thereby violating the public orders of the president.
On Saturday, 27th February, 2021, the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has joined the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other faithfuls of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the One Week memorial service of the late Richard Diedong Dombo who, until his demise, was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Railways Development Authority.
Many Ghanaians have criticized the Vice President and President for what they described as a total violation of the covid-19 safety protocols after the Vice President made a post on his Facebook page.
The statement made by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his address on measures taken against spread of Coronavirus reads “The imposition of restrictions on our daily routines helped in reducing the prevalence of the pandemic in the country, and Government has been left with no option but to re-introduce some of these restrictions in order to help save the situation. I know these measures, in the recent past, were unpleasant, but, over a
period, they resulted in a favourable situation for our country. We have to return to them. So, fellow Ghanaians, until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical perfor mances, and parties are banned. Private burials, with no more than twenty-five (25) people, can take place, with the enforcement of the social distancing, hygiene and mask wearing protocols.”
It’s still unclear to many Ghanaians as to whether the laws are made for the ordinary citizens to obey or it’s for the entire nation irrespective of who is involved.
