The Ghana Police Administration has made a list of Police Officers who lost their lives while performing lawful duties. The Service noted that, these officers are celebrated as fallen heroes of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
According to the Police Service, every year, a day is set aside to recognize contributions and sacrifices of these officers, whether they died in the course of undertaking lawful duties in Ghana, abroad or on peace keeping mission. The day is called Police Memorial Day. The commemoration is to honour the past and shape the future.
On the Memorial Day, tributes are paid to these Fallen Heroes. Their names are also engraved on a Wall of Honour mounted at the Police Cenotaph on the compound of the National Police Training School in Accra. The Wall of Honour is a commemorative wall dedicated to officers who perish through adversarial or combative action. Fallen Heroes who did not die in a combative action have their names written in a Roll of Honour. The Roll of Honour is in the form of a book.

Notwithstanding the qualification above, a Police Officer may die in the course of performing lawful duty but will not be recognized as a Fallen Hero, if the Officer is found to have committed suicide, misconduct or gross negligence leading to their death. Also, if it is certified that an officer who would have otherwise qualified for celebration was under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substance, that Officer shall be disqualified.
Fallen Heroes are determined through vigorous selection by a Panel. Membership of the Panel and the criteria for selection are set out under the Police Service Instruction No. 64A. The selection is also subject to the approval of the Police Management Board. The Police Memorial Day was first celebrated in the year 2014.
