Power distribution process in Ghana: How ECG gets power and its distribution

In Ghana, electricity goes through multiple steps and players before reaching various homes or offices.

It is important to understand that ECG does not generate electricity, ECG simply re-distributes what it has purchased from electricity-generating rating companies like VRA and Bui Power Authority.

GRIDCo acts as a middleman between the electricity generating companies and ECG, by transmitting power purchased by ECG from the companies, to various ECG power stations.

1. The first step in the cycle of the electrical power journey in Ghana is Power generation plant (VRA/BPA & IPS)

2. It moves from the Power generation plant to Step up transformers

3. The next process is moving to the Tower

4. Transmission substation (GRIDCo)

5. Distribution substation (ECG)

6. Transformers

7. The last step of the process is to various homes /or offices
