Prempeh College wins 2020 Robofest Online World Championship title

The Prempeh College, boys Senior High School in the heart of Ashanti Kumasi has won the 2020 Robofest Online World Championship title.

In October 2020, the Prempeh College was adjudged the overall best in the 2020 Robofest Online World Championship which was virtually organized for second cycle institutions.

Due to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic, the organizers couldn’t organize a befitting ceremony for the official presentation of the trophy until April 2021.

The recent victory of the College made them the third times champions of Robofest World Championship/ Competition. They won the trophy in 2013, 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Reports available indicate that, the Prempeh College qualified for the world championship by dominating the Ashanti regional and national championships earlier this year, where they placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the competition respectively.

“The Prempeh Mikogolf squad, made up of Francis Awortwe Junior, Ablorhey Tetteh Jude, Gyandoh Asiedu Ekow, David Nintang Junior, and Christopher Alhassan, gathered at their school science laboratory for the world championship, where they were supervised by their tutor and organizer, Mr Peter Agyeman.” The reports said.

The Prempeh College was given the task of designing a robot that could be attached to a piece of wood and put golf balls in five different colors into a hole slot in a fixed amount of time without losing any of the balls.

According to sources, the Prempeh Mikogolf team scored 103 points after two rounds, good enough to win the champions’ trophy.

Meanwhile, the organizers of the Robofest Online World Competition have presented the trophy and certificates of participation to the winning school.

The Country Director of Robotics Inspired Science Education (RISE) and a founding member of GRAF, Dr. Yaw Okraku-Yirenkyi has congratulated the winning team on their outstanding performance and hoped that their hard work would encourage other teams around the country to follow their lead.

The Former Minister of Education Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh in a congratulatory message said he’s delighted to learn that his alma mater, Prempeh College, has won the 2020 Robofest Online World Championship title.

According to him, Prempeh College is and has always been a centre of excellence and he is not surprised that the College has chalked this feat among many others.

“Coming on the back of other Ghanaian schools winning this award, it is clear that a great deal of talent resides in our youth and must be harnessed to bring progress to our country. I congratulate the college team and wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. Floreat Prempeh College!!” Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh explained.
