President Akufo-Addo laments over withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his disappointment over the unfortunate decision made by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The three (3) countries, currently under military rule, have publicly announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS, citing the belief that the organization has lost its relevance and does not adequately support their interests.
President Akufo-Addo, a former Chair of ECOWAS, has emphasized that this decision will have negative consequences for the people living in those countries. He has also mentioned that a meeting is yet to be held to assess the impacts of the withdrawal and determine the way forward.

President Akufo-Addo stated, “It is regrettable that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have made the unfortunate decision to withdraw from the ECOWAS community. This will have a very negative effect on the populations in those countries. However, ECOWAS has not yet convened. The announcement was made on Sunday, and we are awaiting a signal from the leader, Nigerian President Tinubu, to indicate when we will hold a summit to examine the implications of this development and determine the future direction for the community.
