PURC Orders ECG to Compensate affected Customers up to GH¢1200

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG to pay compensation to customers who have been unable to purchase prepaid credits for many days.
For about seven days, many ECG customers across the country have had to queue at vending centres in search of credit for their meters in order to use electricity to no avail.
According to a letter from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, PURC to the Electricity Company of Ghana, the commission ordered ECG to compensate customers.

The utility regulatory body said the compensation should cover the period of October 1 to 7, 2022.

BELOW ARE DETAILS OF THE ORDER
Details of Order
1. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has noted a widespread system failure in the prepayment meter vending systems of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in various locations around the country, which was confirmed in a Press Release issued by ECG.
2. Among others, the law imposes a duty on public utilities to provide safe, adequate,
efficient, reasonable and non discriminatory service.
3. The Iaw also mandates the Commission to impose compensation orders among other penalties on public utilities for failure to comply with their legal obligations.
4. In view of the extent of inconvenience obtained by the failures with the ECG
prepayment meter system, the Commission has determined that ECG shall pay compensation to all its affected customers.
ECG IS HEREBY ORDERED to compensate each affected customer for loss suffered
as a show of responsive customer service as follows:
