The Vice President of Ghana and 2024 flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has called for a major overhaul of Ghana’s driver’s license renewal system, describing the current two-year cycle as “nøns£nsïcæl.”
Speaking to chiefs and stakeholders in the Eastern Region specifically, Akwatia Constituency, Dr. Bawumia argued that the frequent renewal requirement is a hassle for drivers, leading to unnecessary harassment from authorities. He proposed extending the renewal period to 8 or 10 years, citing the need for a more practical approach.
“Drivers are here. Today, the driver’s license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years. Let us make sure you can have a driver’s license without having to renew it every year. It does not make sense, and so by the grace of God we would make changes”.
The current system, mandated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), requires drivers to renew their licenses every two (2) years. In contrast, Ghanaian passports are renewed every ten (10) years, highlighting the disparity in the system.
Dr. Bawumia’s proposal aims to alleviate the burden on drivers and promote a more efficient licensing process. As the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), his advocacy for change reflects a commitment to addressing everyday challenges faced by Ghanaians.
