The car-free day which started as a monthly event in 2016 as the City of Kigali initiative, but a year later it was made fortnightly, on the recommendation of President Paul Kagame after he attended it in 2017.

When is the World Car Free Day celebrated?

The initiative was adopted from the “World Car Free Day” which is celebrated annually on 22nd September.

The aim of the World Car Free Day is to inspire people to give up their vehicles and use non-motorized transport, like biking, staking or walking, instead.

Rwanda President in the person of His Excellency Paul Kagame joined thousands of Kigali residents in their bi-month car-free day walkout on Sunday 17th November, 2021.

All major roads in in Kigali and other parts of the country are usually closed temporarily for residents to walk, jog, and ride bicycles.
