Schools in Gushegu suffer critical furniture deficit -EDUWATCH

According to Mr. Asare, Gushegu Municipal has a basic school desk deficit of 17,849. The municipality received 180 dual desks from GETFund in 2022/23.
Gushegu M/A Primary Block A received 10 dual desks which were being used in P4. The class had just 15 desks for a population of 57 pupils.
He said Gushegu M/A JHS received five (5) dual desks, which were all being used in JHS 1. The class had nine (9) dual and nine (9) mono desks for a population of 68 pupils.
The Maazijung JHS had 40 dual desks for 315 pupils – a situation which has forced the school to run two (2) streams.
The Gushegu Demonstration Basic 2 Class had 145 pupils using 40 desks.
The Gushegu Demonstration Basic 3 Class had 163 pupils using 30 desks.
Gushiegu mirrors the situation in many districts in Ghana. The desk situation in basic schools is not improving, as demand is far ahead of supply. Over one million desks are needed nationwide, as against the 13,000 distributed by GETFund.

“We call on the Mohammed Amin Adam and the Ministry of Finance, Ghana to release outstanding funds for procuring desks in the 2023 GETFund formula,” EDUWATCH.
“We urge Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and his Ministry of Education GH to increase allocations for desks to basic schools to at least GHC 60 million in the 2024 GETFund formula,” EDUWATCH calls on MoE.
“We call on political parties to prioritise the basic school furniture deficits in their manifestos.”
