Special Prosecutor assures action on Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining report

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has promised to take “necessary action” against any person found guilty in the report on the former Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).
The report was authored by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who chaired the committee, and cited government officials for complicity in illegal mining and mass forest degradation. Some of the persons mentioned in the report include the late CEO of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Osei Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, who was accused of owning a Chinese gang mining in forest reserves.
In response to calls for investigations into the matter, the OSP has assured the public and civil society that its investigation is ongoing and will be far-reaching, covering the issues raised in the Frimpong-Boateng report. Mr. Agyebeng said in a press release that “The OSP will take necessary action against all persons deemed culpable of corruption and corruption-related offences in the mining sector”.
He also referred to an October 2022 press release, which announced the Office’s initial steps to investigate suspected corruption and corruption-related offences in the illegal mining sector. The OSP has acknowledged the calls for action made on the matter following the publication of the Frimpong-Boateng report.
