Steve Harwell Biography
Steven Scott Harwell was an American singer-songwriter. Harwell was the lead singer and frontman for the rock band Smash Mouth from its inception in 1994 until his retirement in 2021.
Before his retirement, he and bassist Paul De Lisle were the only two permanent members of the band.
Greg Camp co-founded Smash Mouth with Harwell, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle. Harwell was once a rapper with F.O.S. Their first hit was “Walkin’ on the Sun” in 1997.
Harwell appeared in the sixth season of the VH1 reality show The Surreal Life in 2006. He has been on several television and radio shows, as well as in the 2001 film Rat Race. His most famous tune was “All-Star.”
Harwell also sang two songs for the 2013 South Korean-Chinese animated film Pororo, The Racing Adventure, “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy.”
On August 27, 2016, Harwell collapsed on stage while performing with Smash Mouth in Urbana, Illinois, and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The band finished the show without him, with De Lisle on vocals.
The band performed at a beer and wine event at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York, in October 2021, where Harwell seemed to be inebriated, threatening audience members and giving what appeared to be a Nazi salute. Harwell announced his retirement after the performance due to chronic health difficulties.
