Togbe Komla Sakpiti V slams VRA over “I don’t care” attitude towards Dam spillage-affected communities

The Dufia of Bakpa Awadiwoekome, Togbe Komla Sakpiti V, has expressed his outrage and disappointment at the Volta River Authority (VRA) for their “I don’t care” attitude towards the welfare of his people.
This comes after the VRA organized a precautionary spillage workshop on Thursday 11th July 2024 to create awareness of possible spillage as the rains continue to increase in the northern part of Ghana and Burkina Faso, without making any statements on the settlement of affected communities.
According to the VRA, the planned spillage will release 50,000 CFS of water, which will largely remain within the river channels. However, Togbe Komla Sakpiti V is concerned about the welfare of his people, especially those living on islands along the Volta River in the Central Tongu area, who will be greatly affected by the spillage.
Togbe Komla Sakpiti V recounted the devastating experience of his people in 2023 when the Dam was spilled, which resulted in significant costs in feeding and providing shelter for the people of Awadiwoekome.

The Dufia is calling on the Government to speed up settlement projects across the District to provide a peaceful place of refuge for his people.
He also expressed his frustration at the VRA’s lack of concern for the affected communities, stating that the emergency spillage of the Akosombo Dam in 2023 had already caused significant destruction, including loss of livelihoods, homes, and displacement of people along the River banks.
Togbe Komla Sakpiti V’s concerns highlight the need for the VRA and the Government to prioritize the welfare of affected communities and take concrete steps to mitigate the impact of the spillage.
