UCC, SRC dragged to Court: Injunction placed on UCC 2023/2024 SRC/L.NUGS/GRASAG/JCRC Elections

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the UCC Students’ Representative Council (SRC) have been taken to the Cape Coast High Court by a student of the university and a member of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
This has led to an injunction on the 2023/2024 SRC/L.NUGS/GRASAG/JCRC Elections by the High Court on June 27, 2024.
This information was confirmed by the office of the Dean of Students’ in a notice signed by Vice Dean Prof. Edem K. Amenumey.
Prof. Edem K. Amenumey, in a public notice, said, “We wish to inform the general student body and the entire university community that, following an injunction from the Cape Coast High Court dated June 27, 2024, the 2023/2024 SRC/L.NUGS/GRASAG/JCRC elections have been suspended until further notice. All electioneering processes and activities, including campaigning, must cease forthwith.”
According to the information intercepted by CoverGhana, Osman Yahaya (the Plaintiff), a student of UCC and a member of the SRC of the university, has petitioned the University of Cape Coast and the Students’ Representative Council due to a “breach of the electoral requirements.”
The Plaintiff stated, “Immediately after the vetting, I realized that one of the candidates who was presented for vetting, Abraham Norman Nortey, did not meet the eligibility requirements to contest in the elections.”
Further, the Plaintiff said, “Upon becoming aware of this, a formal petition highlighting the discrepancy and requesting corrective action was submitted to the Dean of Students of the 1st Defendant, yet no affirmative steps have been taken to address this breach of the electoral requirements.”
Osman Yahaya further stated, “On June 19, 2024, I petitioned the Registrar of the 1st Defendant to rectify this electoral breach, but again, no affirmative steps have been taken.”
Adding, he detailed that “due to the fact that the conduct of the election is fast approaching, he deemed it prudent to invoke the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court to give effect to the legal requirements and make consequential orders thereof.”
