UHAS announces date to graduate First Cohort of Orthotics and Prosthetics Professionals
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is set to graduate its first Cohort of Bachelor of Orthotics and Prosthetics programme students.
The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) is the first University in Sub-Saharan Africa to enroll students for the Bachelor of Orthotics and Prosthetics programme. A total of 26 students, after a 4-year programme are set to graduate at the 9th Congregation ceremony of the University scheduled for Saturday, November 30, 2024.
The University is proud of these students who are the first cohort of this programme and pioneers in this specialized field that holds an immense potential to transform healthcare delivery in Ghana and beyond.
This inaugural class, trained under the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics of the School of Allied Health Sciences, represents a significant leap in Ghana’s commitment to addressing the needs of individuals living with physical disabilities. The programme, which combines theory with practical training, has equipped these graduands with the skills and knowledge to design, fabricate and fit prosthetic and orthotic devices. They are also prepared to provide rehabilitation support, enhance mobility and improve the independence of their clients.
Ghana, like many countries in the sub-region, has faced a longstanding shortage of trained professionals in this field. Individuals requiring prosthetic or orthotic support often had to rely on limited facilities or travel abroad for specialized care.
The graduation of these professionals from UHAS signals the beginning of a new era where local expertise can meet this demand and reduce barriers to healthcare and improve accessibility.
As these graduands step into the professional world, they are poised to make a profound impact in hospitals, rehabilitation centres and communities across Ghana and beyond. Their contributions will not only enhance the quality of life for individuals with physical impairments but also inspire a new generation of students to explore careers in Allied Health Sciences.
This milestone could not have been achieved without the vision of UHAS Leadership, the dedication of faculty and staff, and the support of stakeholders which include the Ministry of Health, professional associations and donors. Their collective efforts have made it possible to establish a sustainable system to train experts in a critical area of healthcare.
The graduation of this first cohort is more than an academic achievement; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what is possible when innovation meets determination.
