Calls for Full Time PhD Applications
The University of Ghana together with four partner institutions; University of Cape Coast, Oregon State University, Makerere University, and Sunbird AI have received funding from NIH to conduct a study titled “Leveraging Data Science Applications to Improve Children’s Environmental Health in Sub-Saharan Africa (DICE Project)”.
The aim of the DICE Project is to harness data science applications to establish the spatial variability in the impact of ambient PM2.5 exposure on children’s health in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and further
identify the explanatory and moderating factors.

The implementing institutions are seeking to recruit an outstanding PhD candidate to work on the DICE Project and build their capacity building in advanced and novel geospatial modeling and interactive web-based mapping techniques.
The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Biostatistics, School of Public Health, and work under the direct supervision of Prof. Justice Moses K. Aheto.

The candidate will in addition have the opportunity to work with investigators from the other partner institutions and acquire knowledge in data science applications in public health, air pollution epidemiology and Bayesian statistics.
Funding
The project will fund the successful candidate for a maximum of four years and will pay the candidate’s tuition fees and provide a monthly stipend.

Requirements
The candidate
1. Must have a Masters degree (MSc/MPhil) in Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology or related discipline. First Year PhD candidates in Biostatistics, Statistics, good Mathematics and Epidemiology at the University of Ghana for the 2023/2024 academic year are eligible to apply and are strongly encouraged.
Such candidates will, however, be required to change their research plan to fit the aims of the DICE project.
2. Be an African citizen.
3. Must not be employed in any full-time or part-time job.

4. Have previous experience or understanding of Geospatial/ Spatiotemporal modelling and mapping.
5. Have experience working with Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) datasets.
6. Have excellent data analysis and programming skills in R, Python, or both.
7. Strong competencies in oral and written English language.
