The University of Victoria (UVic), Canada has announced a funded Master’s Degree opportunity in the Department of Geography at the University starting in September 2023.
According to the publication, the applicants will be supervised by Dr. Sophia Carodenuto and Dr. Rachel Friedman.
COMPONENTS OF STUDENT’S MA THESIS
This research according to the Department will form the basis of the student’s MA thesis.
The Department of Geography said successful applicants will contribute to ongoing research examining the relationships between policies and initiatives to curb deforestation embedded in food systems, and the social and environmental implications in producer geographies.
In particular, this research employs practice-based approaches in cocoa supply chains to understand the effects of sustainability measures on livelihoods, gender equity, and forest health within these systems.
The successful applicant will contribute to social and policy research related to food commodity supply chain sustainability. They will have the opportunity to use community-engaged research methods to explore social or social-ecological trade-offs and synergies of sustainability policy through a cocoa production case study.
Further, it is anticipated that the successful applicant will have an interest in connecting their research with practical action and using scientific inquiry as a tool for problem-solving.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This Master’s position will include a year of coursework on theory and research methods to prepare the student to subsequently embark on a semi-independent research project in the second year of their program.
Under close supervision of both supervisors, the student will apply the methodological training received in their coursework to design data collection and analysis strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR UVic MASTER’s DEGREE
To apply, applicants must have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in the following:
- Environmental Studies.
- Anthropology
- Political Science
- Geography
- or related field.
Additionally, the applicant must have strong written and oral skills in English. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication, writing, and organizational skill.
WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Those with work experience will be preferred, with a particular preference for those with fieldwork experience in the African or Pacific Island contexts.
Demonstrated experience following protocol in community-engaged research is especially welcome. Either MA or MSc degree is possible based on the student’s background and aspirations.

Next year, 2023 September is the slated start date for the Master’s Degree.
WORKING LOCATION FOR APPLICANTS
The student will be based at the University of Victoria in Canada, except for the time spent in the field in the case of fieldwork.
