USAID extends $500k support to flood-affected schools in Akosombo Dam Spillage
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has pledged $500,000 to support the affected schools and facilitate their return to normalcy.
In the wake of the devastating flood crisis caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in October 2023, schools and students in flood-affected communities of the Volta Region are poised to receive a significant lifeline.
Many schools in the region faced severe damage during the flood crisis with some being completely submerged and others transformed into temporary shelters to accommodate displaced residents. However, with this generous financial aid, USAID aims to contribute towards the restoration of educational facilities and materials, enabling students to resume their studies and communities to rebuild.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, expressed her satisfaction with the collaboration between Ghana and the United States, which she believes has played a pivotal role in saving countless lives. During a working visit with Ghana’s Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ambassador Palmer emphasized the positive outcomes resulting from the partnership between the two nations.
Recognizing the urgent need to restore teaching and learning in the flood-affected areas, USAID and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have joined forces to provide assistance to the affected schools and communities.
Their collective efforts seek to ensure that children, despite the challenges they have endured, can access quality education and embark on a path of normalcy and growth.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, urged parents in the affected areas to take advantage of the government’s free Senior High School (SHS) policy and enroll their children in school. He emphasized the importance of education as a catalyst for rebuilding communities and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency, where the impact of the floods was most severe acknowledged the implementation of several initiatives aimed at rebuilding the affected communities and schools. He expressed optimism that the combined efforts of the government, USAID, and other stakeholders would expedite the recovery process and restore hope to the affected populations.
