UTAG threatens to embark on strike over position cancellations by GTEC

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Development Studies (UDS) has issued a warning of a potential strike in response to the alleged cancellation of certain positions by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
UTAG claims that the Commission has initiated a ban on specific office positions that were previously approved by the University Councils of various universities.
The actions taken by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission have raised concerns among UTAG-UDS, as they perceive these actions as a threat to the autonomy of public universities.
Dr. Elliasu Mumuni, Secretary of UTAG-UDS, expressed the discontent of members and the potential consequences of these actions.
He stated, “Our members are not taking this matter lightly at the local level, and unless these exercises are halted or the directives are put on hold, members are threatening that by the 28th, both UTAG and the University teachers at UDS will be unable to carry out teaching activities or engage in any other community service that aligns with the functions of a university.”
The issue at hand highlights the tension between UTAG and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission regarding the authority and decision-making processes within Ghana’s tertiary education system.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether a resolution can be reached to avert the potential disruption to university activities.
