President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his victory in the December 2020 Presidential Election has once again been affirmed by the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision.

On Thursday, 4th March, 2021, the Supreme Court of Ghana, in a unanimous decision of a seven Member Panel presided over by the Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah has dismissed John Dramani Mahama’s (Petitioner) election petition brought before it challenging the 2020 Presidential Election outcome.

The 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama on 30th December, 2020 filed a Petition at the Supreme Court challenging the results of the polls insisting that none of the nine presidential candidates obtained the mandatory 50%+1 vote constitutional threshold to be declared the winner of the polls.

The former President in his Petition sought five relieves from the Supreme Court. According to him, there’s a need for the Supreme Court to declare the Electoral Commission’s declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as winner of the December 2020 polls as unconstitutional, null and void.

Mr. Mahama also prayed to the Supreme Court to order the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a re-run of the election between himself and President Akufo-Addo.

Meanwhile, the Petitioner in his closing address insisted that he discharged the burden of proof placed on by the constitution for the Supreme Court to act on in the key interest of the Ghanaians and the democratic rule and sovereignty of the country.

In the midst of all these, the Supreme Court believes that, “The petitioner did not demonstrate in any way how the errors [committed by the EC] affected the declaration of the election. We have therefore no reason to order a re-run [of the polls]. We accordingly dismiss the petition”

Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah while reading the seven panel judgement said, their unanimously decision proved that, the petition has no merit hence dismissed it appropriately. “Your petition is dismissed without merit.” The Chief Justice said.
