Volta River Authority grants scholarships to 60 exceptional students

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has allocated scholarships valued at GHC1 million to 60 exceptionally gifted yet financially challenged students pursuing various academic programs across public tertiary institutions for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years.
This generous support was extended as part of the Volta River Authority’s Community Development Programme (CDP). During the Scholarship Awards Ceremony held in Akuse, Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, the Chief Executive of VRA, announced that these new scholarships have brought the total number of beneficiaries to an impressive 449.
The CDP Scholarship program operates on a competitive basis, with a particular focus on applicants pursuing studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Its primary objective is to assist exceptionally talented but underprivileged students while contributing to the development of human resources within local communities.

Since 2011, the VRA has sponsored 389 students hailing from operational areas such as Akosombo, Akuse, Tema/Kpone, and Aboadze. Of these, 234 students received support at the Senior High School level, while 155 benefitted from tertiary-level scholarships.
Mr. Antwi-Darkwa emphasized that VRA is actively engaged in a digital transformation journey in alignment with its agenda of creativity and innovation. As a result, the scholarship application process has been streamlined and migrated online.

Highlighting the achievements of the Scholarship scheme, he noted that a significant number of beneficiaries are the first in their families and, in some cases, their communities to pursue higher education. In 2022, 27 students successfully graduated from their institutions, with five earning First-Class Honors.

- Mr. Emmanuel Tettey Abaitey (BSc. Business Administration)
- Miss Beauty Cooper (BSc. Midwifery)
- Mr. Robert Tamakloe (B.A Communication Design)
- University of Ghana:
- Miss. Benedicta Honga (Currently at Ghana School of Law for her Professional Programme Bachelor of Laws – LLB)
- Koforidua Technical University:
- Akplobi Afenyo (HND Biomedical Engineering)

Additionally, Mr. Theophilus Narteh Wakemeh and Miss Ernestine Emefa Akorli, who graduated three and two years ago, respectively, are currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s in Communications at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA.
Furthermore, Mr. Ivan Nyamasekpor, a 2020 graduate from the University of Ghana, has been invited as a speaker to the IAU 2023 International Conference in Doha, Qatar, where he is the sole African representative.

Mr. Antwi-Darkwa also proudly acknowledged the formation of an Alumni Association by past beneficiaries of the Authority’s scholarships, which seeks to make significant contributions to the development of their communities.
Several alumni have actively participated in the Authority’s flagship Employee Volunteer Programme (EVP), which provides a platform for sharing experiences, counseling, and imparting knowledge to students in public senior high schools within VRA’s operational areas.
