The leader of the family of the late Oscar Ameyewode led by the Volta regional Chairman, the Constituency Chairman and the MP of the South Tongu Constituency announced officially to the former president John Dramani Mahama and running mate Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as well as former chief of staff Julius Debra the demise of the late former MP and ambassador to China under former president Jerry Rawlings.

The leader of the family said the former MP was taken ill in a short period and gave out the ghost which was sudden by the whole family.


He gave the date of burial as 10th and 11th February, 2023.

The Volta regional chairman of the NDC Hon Mawutor Agbavitor reminded the former president of the vital positions the late MP held in the party and how he played his roles, the reason why the party needed to play a vital role in the funeral rights.

Oscar Ameyewode was the former MP for South Tongu Constituency from 1992 – 1996, former ambassador to China, former director of national lottery.

The incumbent Member of Parliament honourable Kobena Mensah Woyome, the sitting MP of the constituency added his mentorship roles in the party as well as how he has been contributing immensely in resolving some conflicts in the party in South Tongu constituency.

On his part, Mr Kofi Attor, a former bosom friend of the late MP and council of elders member narrated how he and two other friends worked on the late Oscar Ameyedowo through Mr Morgan Nyendu and the late Gascony to contest for the Parliamentary seat in the first Parliament.

He briefed the house on the reason why former president Jerry John Rawlings reassigned the late ambassador to China after he gave up on the parliamentary seat in 1996 as he JJ doesn’t want his usefulness to go waste.


He made it known that, the late Ameyedowo’s workings with the China government had benefited the country in diverse ways. He reiterated that, the late former ambassador is the architect behind the current relationship between Ghana and China.

He again made it known to the house how the vice president to JJ Rawlings at the time Attah Mills went to China to promised the late Ameyedowo a ministerial role instead of the ambassadorial role because of his hard works and hence brought him to lead the National lotteries prior to the 2000 elections.

The former president accepted the invitation and made it known to the gathering that, he got informed of the late Ameyedowo’s demise the very day he was preparing to visit him at the hospital. He assured the family of his office’s resolve to participate in the funeral as that is necessary to serve as motivation to all those who sacrifices for the party.


He made it known to the gathering that, it’s only under the leadership of the former MP that, national lotteries have a balance of GH¢ 400,000,000.0 but today the institution is struggling to survive due to bad leadership.

He encouraged all party faithfuls to assist the family in this crucial time.

He again bemoan all party faithfuls to use the occasion to resolve all differences among the ranks and file of the constituents.
