WAEC Certificates: How to Replace Lost, Misplaced, or Damaged BECE / WASSCE Certificates

The West African Examinations Council is a lawfully established examination board tasked with determining the examinations required in the public interest in English-speaking West African countries, conducting the examinations, and awarding certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities worldwide.

Issuance of certificates

• Certificates for school candidates are sent to the schools which presented them for their respective examinations.
• Private candidates, on the other hand, personally collect their certificates from the council’s office in the region where they wrote the examination.
• Certificate application forms can be downloaded on the internet from the WAEC website.

Replacement of lost certificate

• Certificates are issued only once.
• However, candidates can request confirmation of their results from any institution for a fee.
• Candidates can also apply for attestation of results online.

• Certificates cannot be reprinted after the gazette, even if a candidate has changed their name. Certificates are printed once.
• The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) does not issue duplicate certificates.
• WAEC now issues an Attestation of Results for certificates that have been misplaced or damaged. The attestation of the result is as valid as the certificate. Users who wish to confirm the details on the document can do so with the Council.

Attestation of Results

• Attestation of Results is issued to individual candidates or persons for their possession.
• The Attestation must be collected personally by applicants from the offices of the Council in Accra or the regions.
• For the issuance of the Attestation, applicants will be required to provide their full name as used in the examination, the name, month, and year of examination, their index number, passport, photograph and a valid identification document.
• The fee for the Attestation of Results is GH¢400.00, subject to review by the council.

NOTE: WAEC has a straightforward process for the issuance of certificates, replacement of lost certificates, and reprinting of certificates after the gazette. Candidates are advised to keep their original certificates safe and secure. If a certificate is lost or damaged, candidates can apply for the Attestation of Results, which is a valid alternative.
