What is Jawfish?

The Jawfishes belong to the family of fishes. They have been classified as Opistognathidae.

How big is a jawfish?

Most of jawfishes have a length rank of 3.9 inches to 10 centimeters. Their body is elongated and have a shiny golden like body. Sone of the species of jawfish are called giant jawfish. As the name suggests, there length is approx. 1 feet 8 inches with extremely big eyes, & mouths as compared to the usual or normal jawfish. Their bodies are relatively smaller than the upper features mentioned above.

What does a jawfish do?

These species of fish are wonderful in taking some tasks. As the name suggests, ‘jaw’, they use their jaws to incubate eggs for their females & moving relocating of rocks in their habitat regions.

Jawfish habitat / where are jaw fish found?

They are common in Florida, U.S.  From the Carribean sea, there are a lot of yellow head jawfish referred to as Opistognathus aurifrons.

In the rocks, sand rubble areas in large quantities or group having about 70 species of them in those areas.  There are blue, gold, yellow, etc species of Jawfishes.

Jaw fishes in the Carribean sea are located at a depth range of 3-10 meters which is equivalent to 9.8 – 131 feet deep into the sea.

The jawfishes are created wonderfully. Their males fertilize and incubate the eggs in their mouths for the gestation period: 8  to 10 days after fertilization then he spit it to hatch.

Jawfishes’ binomial name was given by D.S Jordan and J.C Thompson in the year 1905. Even though the Opistognathius aurifrons were discovered few years ago.

Jawfish feeding / what do jawfish feed on?

Since there are different species of Jawfishes, it means their mode of feeding might vary. Some feed on tiny /or small animals in the habitats, worms, others feed on crustaceans including the invertebrates depending on where the Opistognathius aurifrons (jawfishes) are dwell.

Jawfish lifespan

Without any blockage or barriers beyond their control, the Opistognathius aurifrons survive for three (3) to five (5) years on earth.  (3 to 5 years).
