Take note of the following misconceptions about the GES Responsibility Allowance
Contrary to what many think, it does not appear on the payslip as a separate item with the name “Responsibility Allowance”.
The responsibility allowance is:
- not a flat rate or the same amount paid to everyone with this privilege.
- not a fixed percentage of your basic salary (some say it’s 10% of one’s basic pay, which is a wrong assumption). It is a movement up by a step on the single spine salary scale.

For example;
Assuming a teacher under GES is on the rank of Principal Superintendent, which is level 16H. If he becomes the Headmaster of his school, his salary level will be moved from 16H to level 17H when placed on the responsibility allowance.
Assistant Director II: A staff on Assistant Director II thus level 18H, when placed on responsibility allowance will be moved to level 19L.
Assistant Director 1: An officer on the rank of Assistant Director I thus level 19H will be moved to level 20L when placed on responsibility allowance.
Deputy Director: This rank has a level of 20H. A staff on this rank will be moved to 21L.
The salary difference between these salary levels becomes the responsibility allowance. For example, if 16H is 2k and 17H is 2.3k, the 300gh becomes the responsibility allowance.
NB: The H and the L means High and Low. It’s a categorization criteria on the Single Spine Scale.
Vital notice
Remember that every salary level has points. These points increase by 1 every year. Every movement in points culminates in an incremental jump in salary.
For example, if 16H Point 1 is 2k, this figure increases say, by 50gh each year.
Therefore, an officer at Level 16H Point 1 before receiving this privilege of responsibility allowance to level 17H will see more money added to his salary than another officer at level 16H Point 5. This is because, by virtue of yearly incremental jumps, he has already moved closer to the 17H.
For instance, while one person will experience a 300gh change in salary, another will only see a 50gh change.
To enjoy this allowance, you should be assigned an additional duty or responsibility to perform in addition to your primary role or appointed to a position that demands extra from you. Additionally, you should be on the rank of at least Principal Superintendent.
In the basic school, only the headmaster is entitled to the responsibility allowance. For example, in a primary school with a staff of 9, only one person enjoys it among them. The assistant doesn’t.
The same applies to Junior High School. Only the head is entitled to it. Form masters and assistant heads do not.
Even in a situation where the KG, Primary, and JHS have one head or the school is having multiple streams, no matter the student population or staff strength, as long as it has only one headmaster, he is the only one entitled to it.

However, in the senior high school, the list is extended. The headmaster, the assistants, chaplains/imams, form masters, guidance and counseling coordinators, heads of the 9 designated departments, and house masters/mistresses.
It is an erroneous misconception to think that every teacher in the Senior High School takes responsibility allowance.
Officers at the GES offices are not left out.
Frontline heads at the various district and regional offices as well as unit heads have also been captured.
Of course, it’s an addition to one’s salary. It adds something to your SSNIT contribution and affordability. But it’s not the kind of increment that makes you a billionaire.
