Miss Ghana 2022, Miriam Xorlali Tordzeagbo has paid tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the Ewe people through her national costume, which honors the story of their migration. The costume beautifully captures the bravery, resilience, and ingenuity of the Ewe people in their quest for freedom and a better life.
The Ewe people originated from Notsie, a town in present-day Togo, and faced oppressive rule under King Agorkorli. Determined to escape their confinement, the Ewe inhabitants devised a remarkable plan. They weakened the walls of their prison by consistently applying water during their daily household chores, gradually eroding the structure and creating an opportunity for their escape.
To mislead the king and elders, the Ewe people executed a strategic march in reverse, giving the illusion that they were heading toward Notsie rather than away from it. This clever tactic allowed them to successfully flee and find refuge in new lands.
Miss Ghana’s national costume showcases the vibrant and intricately handwoven Ewe Kete fabric from Agotime Kpetoe in the Volta region. The costume’s headpiece, known as the Kevi, represents the ancestral tradition of balancing possessions on the head during the migration. It serves as a symbol of strength and resilience.
The staff featured in the costume represents the support given to the courageous elderly women who spearheaded the march, guiding their communities to safety. It highlights the unity and collective effort that enabled the successful escape.
One striking element of the costume is its exaggerated back, which depicts how the women carried their families’ worn clothes during the arduous journey. This serves as a testament to their resourcefulness and determination to preserve their belongings until they reach the next water source. It symbolizes the Ewe people’s ability to adapt and find solutions in challenging circumstances.
