Dr. David Larbi Simpong donates laptop, two Rotary Microtomes worth €10,000 to UCC Department of Medical Laboratory Science

Dr. David Larbi Simpong, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has made a remarkable contribution by donating valuable equipment to the department. The donation includes a laptop and two (2) Rotary Microtomes collectively worth €10,000, which will significantly enhance the practical training of students in Pathology.

The Rotary Microtomes are instrumental in processing biological tissue for research and clinical diagnosis of diseases, particularly cancers. By providing these cutting-edge instruments, Dr. Simpong aims to improve the educational experience and skill development of students within the Department of Medical Laboratory Science.

During a ceremony held at the department’s premises to officially hand over the equipment, Dr. Simpong revealed that he had secured a grant from the “Shaping Development-oriented Migration” (MEG) Programme. This initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, supported Dr. Simpong’s efforts to acquire the much-needed equipment.

Expressing his optimism about the impact of the donated equipment, Dr. Simpong urged the staff and students to make effective use of the resources to ensure their longevity and maximize their benefits in the training process.

Prof. Richard Kobina Dadzie Ephraim, the Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, received the equipment on behalf of the department and expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Simpong for his generous donation. Prof. Ephraim acknowledged that this contribution would significantly enhance the training of students and strengthen the department’s capabilities in delivering high-quality education.

Prof. Ephraim also highlighted Dr. Simpong’s previous support to the department, mentioning that in 2021, he had won a similar award from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). With the funds received, Dr. Simpong acquired a teaching microscope, a base sledge microtome, and accompanying accessories worth €11,500, further bolstering the department’s resources.

Prof. Ephraim assured the MEG & GIZ, as well as the wider public, that the donated items would be utilized for their intended purposes and contribute to the advancement of medical laboratory science education.
