In the dynamic realm of student leadership, Team Barrister has truly left an indelible mark during their tenure as University of Cape Coast (UCC) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President for the 2022/2023 academic year.
Their tireless efforts and innovative approach have brought about transformative changes that have positively impacted the lives of the entire student body. Let’s delve into some of their outstanding accomplishments:
1. Advocated for fees to be reduced to the 15% increment approved by GTEC instead of the almost 30% charged by the University. This saved every student Ghc169.
2. Signed a Health MoU with Ashgin Pharmacy. Previously, students had to buy drugs and later seek refund. This prevented many students from seeking health care due to the cost of drugs, delays in refund and cumbersome nature of the process. The MoU now allows students to get the drugs from Ashgin Pharmacy on credit and the cost of drugs now refunded by management directly to Ashgin. This has increased access to health care and saved students of cost.
3. Constructed the SWLT “Shatta❞ Wale Footpath. This now allows students easy access to SWLT & NLT.
4. Increased Funding to the Students’ Financial Support Unit by 60%. This means the SRC paid Ghc77,271 in extra funds to support needy but brilliant students on the UCC Scholarship.
5. Increased data package from 3.4GB to 5GB.
6. Increased students on the SRC data package from 20,000 to 28,500.
7. Introduced SRC Shop and Shopping Day where students get to buy food staples at highly subsided prices.
8. Renovated, Electrified, and painted all summer huts on campus.
9. Revamped the SRC Diaspora Security Watch Group to offer security protection to students in the diaspora. The SRC also bought torch lights and shockers to aid their work.
10. Supported UCC Students with Disability with Free food items & a cash donation of Ghc8000 to organize an IT training for themselves.
11. Secured as Astro Turf promise from Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. He has promised to redeem it anytime soon.
12. Established SRC Help Desk at Science that assisted students to rectify ICs, register their courses, apply for scholarships, apply for student loans among other student related issues
13. Notable Programs Organized a) Leadership Summit with Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, MP, Assin Central b) Impacting Youth Development with Entrepreneurship with Dr. Daniel McKorley c)60th SRC Week Celebration Grand Durbar with His. Excellency John Dramani Mahama as Guest Speaker d) 60th SRC Artist Night with Shatta Wale
14. Built the “Lumen App” an App that would be used to capture and host teaching timetable online for easy access by students starting next academic year. This would prevent students from looking for their timetable on notice boards.
15. Gazetted and unveiled the SRC Constitution 2023 which started in the 2014/2015 Academic Year.
16. School with Ghc20,000 to reconnect their ICT laboratory to electricity and refurbish it.
17. Introduced the Entrepreneurship Skills Training program where students were taught how to make leather shoes, prepare cake, pastries and do make up, nail and wig fixing.
18. Zero Fees Policy, where the SRC guaranteed for students who could not make any payment to register their courses in the first semester.
19. Submitted a proposal to Academic Board for consideration to change the retake policy for continuing levels to re-sit. What is now left is an academic board meeting to approve it. After which it would hopefully take effect from next academic year.
