AFCON 2023: ‘I demanded more from the players after Cape Verde defeat’ – Chris Hughton
Ghana Black Stars’ Coach, Chris Hughton, has reflected on Ghana’s journey in AFCON 2023 by openly revealing, “I demanded more from the players after the Cape Verde defeat, seeking greater commitment for the challenging task ahead.”
The aftermath of their 2-2 draw with Egypt saw Hughton recognizing the improved performance but expressing frustration, stating, “Of course, it is very frustrating because I thought we deserved to win the game.”
Even though Ghana did marvelous work, the petty mistakes caused by some players of the Black Stars denied Ghana from getting the 3 points. In all, there is hope for Ghana in the next match with Mozambique.
Highlighting the team’s effort, he emphasized, “What I asked after the first performance against Cape Verde from the players was a better performance. More commitment and more running to give ourselves a better chance of putting in a performance to win this game.” He added, “I don’t think I can fault the players, their attitude, and the way they applied themselves.”
The former Newcastle United manager reiterated the team’s disappointment, saying, “At the moment, the dressing room is a very disappointed dressing room because I think it was a really good opportunity for us to get three points.”
Looking ahead, with a crucial match against Mozambique looming, Hughton acknowledged the team’s challenge, stating, “We face the daunting task of beating Mozambique in our last group game at all costs to stand a chance of proceeding to the round of 16, having missed out in the last edition.”
