Akosombo Dam Spillage: Ablakwa distributes life jackets to affected victims

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has distributed free life jackets, made relocation transportation arrangements, and established a fund with seed money of GH₵30,000 to assist victims in need of further emergency support in his constituency.

He made the donation on Wednesday, 11th October, 2023 as he toured VRA spillage affected communities in his beloved constituency.

The Lawmaker after the tour commended all his courageous constituents for the outstanding show of solidarity, compassion, and community spirit in helping each other survive this unprecedented disaster.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa renders special praise to the youth who volunteered night and day to rescue the vulnerable and salvage properties, “you are true heroes.” He said.

“Together, we shall survive this and bounce back happier and stronger. God has got us.” He said.

The three Tongu Enclaves (North Tongu, South Tongu, and Central Tongu) all in the Volta Region of Ghana are heavily flooded following the heavy spillage from Akosombo Dam last night.

The spillage currently affected a number of communities in the area including but not limited to Battor-Dugame, Mepe and its adjoining communities, Volo, Battor-Wugodzi, Memordzi, Sikor community, Sogakope, Awadiwoekome among others.

The affected individuals are currently homeless. The communities, including islands are in a state of being submerged as the spillage continues.

Farmlands, livestock, and farm produces were damaged by the spillage posing the people at risk and famine. The situation, if not addressed in time may lead to a serious threat to life and destruction of major properties.

The residents of the affected communities are appealing to the government through the Volta River Authority (VRA), National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the District Chief Executives of the three District Assemblies in Tongu, Members of Parliament for North Tongu, South Tongu and Central Tongu, Philanthropist to quickly come to their aid.
