Akufo-Addo’s one hot meal package is an insult to teachers; he must apologize – Educationist

A renowned Counsellor cum Educationist Daniel Fenyi is calling on President Nana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately apologize to Ghanaian basic school teachers for promising them one hot meal.

According to him, the president is being selective and bias in sharing his novel Coronavirus packages to deserving Covid-19 frotntline workers. Adding further, he said Health workers were given tax-free salary and frontline workers bagged home 50% salary increase for their efforts towards reducing the Covid-19 menace.

In the case of teachers, one hot meal a day is given them for their contributions in this covid-19 era. This even comes as an afterthought given that basic schools re-opened about 2 months ago, i.e., 29th June.

Counsellor Daniel Fenyi said, the president’s package for teachers is a blatant insult and disrespect to the teaching profession. This action of government emphasises how the country sees and treats the work of teachers as insignificant and valueless.

Counsellor Daniel Fenyi is therefore calling on teacher unions thus; GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT and all relevant teacher unions and stakeholders to quickly rise to condemn this abuse of teachers.


“A country which keeps on treating teachers as nonentities whose efforts can be paid off with a mere meal cannot witness any better development.”

Update No 15: Measures Taken To Combat Spread Of Coronavirus


President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his 15th address to the nation on measures taken to combat the spread of the Coronavirus on Sunday, 16th August, 2020 has announced a free hot meal to all five hundred and eighty-four thousand (584,000) final year Junior High School students, and one hundred and forty-six thousand (146,000) staff, both in public and private schools.

According to the President, he has recently received reports that some final year JHS students were going hungry, in complying with COVID-19 protocols. As a result, his office has since then instructed the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to begin preparations to ensure that, a hot meal per day is provided to the students including their teachers. “This is to ensure full observance of the COVID-19 safety protocols.”

After the president’s address, a number of Ghanaian teachers descended heavily on the President because they are not happy to be provided with a hot meal while other frontline workers receive allowance and tax-free salary.
