Alban Bagbin Recalls MPs from Recess for Urgent Parliamentary Business

Members of Parliament are to cut short their recess period as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has recalled them back to the House. The MPs are expected to return on May 2, 2023, to consider what the Speaker describes as “urgent parliamentary business.”

The House went on break on March 31, 2023, following the passing of three controversial tax bills into law, with one MP involved in an accident on his way to Parliament to partake in the vote to approve the bills. On the same night, the MPs also approved two additional Supreme Court Justices who had been vetted by the Appointments Committee earlier in the year.

In a statement, Alban Bagbin cited the power conferred on him by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana to recall the MPs from recess. The Speaker directed that Parliament shall be recalled from recess to sit on May 2, 2023, to consider urgent parliamentary business.

The recall of MPs from recess for urgent parliamentary business is not a new occurrence in Ghana’s political landscape.
