Bed Capacity at Korle Bu Drops to 1,500 Amid Concerns Over Patient Care – Prof. Titus Beyuo

The Board Chair of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Titus Beyuo, has disclosed that the hospital’s functional bed capacity has declined to approximately 1,500, attributing the situation to a significant number of broken and unreplaced beds.

His revelation follows public uproar sparked by a viral video circulating on social media, which appeared to show patients lying on the floor at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre due to a shortage of beds. The footage triggered widespread concern among Ghanaians, raising questions about conditions at the country’s foremost referral facility.

In response, management of the hospital indicated that it could not authenticate the video, emphasizing that the situation portrayed does not accurately reflect operations at the facility. According to officials, patients captured in the footage were seated on chairs while awaiting admission rather than being treated on the floor.

The Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Yakubu Seidu Adam, also rejected claims that patients are treated on the floor. He maintained that the viral video does not depict the true state of affairs within the emergency wards.

Despite these assurances, Prof. Beyuo’s admission of reduced bed capacity has intensified public discourse on infrastructure and resource challenges confronting the hospital. Stakeholders have called for urgent interventions to repair or replace damaged beds and expand capacity to meet the growing demand for healthcare services.

The development has renewed calls for increased investment in Ghana’s health sector to ensure that critical institutions like Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are adequately equipped to deliver quality and timely care to patients.
