Call off the strike and return to the table of negotiation -FWSC told GRNMA
The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has held a crucial meeting with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to resolve the ongoing nationwide strike and address concerns raised by the Association.
During the engagement, FWSC appealed to GRNMA to call off the strike and return to the negotiation table, stressing the importance of sustained dialogue in resolving labour disputes.
The GRNMA has been on strike since the beginning of this month (June), citing delays in the implementation of their 2024 Conditions of Service, which were agreed upon on May 20, 2024.
According to the FWSC, a formal request was made to the Ministry of Finance on July 1, 2024, to facilitate implementation.
However, the process was halted due to a legal case filed by the Psychiatric Nurses Association, a member of the GRNMA.
Though GRNMA informed FWSC in February 2025 that the court case had been resolved, the government’s budget planning was already at an advanced stage, posing further delays.
Further, the FWSC stated that “The government is currently facing fiscal constraints, making immediate implementation of the agreement difficult.”
The National Labor Commission (NLC) had previously declared the strike illegal, citing the association’s failure to comply with legal procedures under the Labour Act. Despite this, the association proceeded with the strike, severely impacting healthcare delivery nationwide.
The FWSC urges stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation to resolve the impasse. “We urge all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation to resolve the impasse,” Dr. George Smith Graham stated.
“The FWSC will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to find a mutually beneficial solution that ensures the implementation of the collective agreement and addresses the grievances of nurses and midwives,” he said.
The FWSC also indicated that the “GRNMA has expressed frustration over the delay in implementing their collective agreement, citing concerns over their welfare and working conditions.”
