NHIS Members fall into two broad groups
1. contribution paying member mostly, those in the informal sector
2. Non-contribution paying members which include the following:
a. Formal sector employees and the self-employed who contribute to the social security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT contributors)
b. Children (persons under 18years of age)
c. Person in need of ante-natal, delivery and post-health care services (pregnant women)
d. Persons classified by the minister responsible for social welfare as indigents
e. Categories of differently-able persons determined by the minister responsible for social welfare
f. Person with mental disorder,
Pensioners of the social security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT pensioners)
g. Persons above seventy years of age (the elderly)
Other categories prescribed by the minister of Health.
