The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu Constituency and the Ranking Member on Parliamentary select committee on Youth and Sport Honourable Wisdom Kobena Mensah Woyome has cautioned the general public to avoid political mischief of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive to the Ministry of Finance to refund the US$45,000.00 borrowed by the State from former world boxing champion Mr. David Kotei popularly known as D.K Poison.
According to the Minority Spokesperson on Sport, former president John Dramani Mahama’s government did same by paying the 4-generations of 1963,1965,1978 and 1982 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners an amount of US$20,000 to each player in September, 2015 before leaving office.
Wisdom Kobena Mensah Woyome again said, paying D.K poison for a supposed money the state owed him since, 1976 for the purchase of Mackerel and sardines (Tinapa) to feed the Secondary Schools those days from the purse of the Shigge Fukuyama bout very laudable on the part of president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Though, he commended the president for his positive gesture, he noted that, no one should make political mischief out the President’s positive gesture because, this is not the first time a sitting president has directed for a payment of outstanding debts accrued by government.
The Ranking Member has lauded Nana Addo for directing a refund of the money to D.K poison and described his positive gesture as a “Very good act from PREZ Akuffo Addo.”
Mr. Woyome is also asking the government of president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when will the Black Bombers also receive the balance of $8,380 for their Per Diems for the Africa Olympics Boxing Qualifiers held in Dakar-Senegal in February, 2020 and that of the Per Diems of the Female Athletics Relay team that participated at the last year’s World Athletics Championship in Yokohama-Japan?
