Dr. Adutwum unveils new innovative Junior High School Initiatives

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education, in an interview, outlined the transformative steps being taken to enhance the quality of education in Junior High Schools (JSS) across the country.

The minister disclosed plans to introduce targeted interventions for students struggling in specific subjects, with a particular focus on English literacy.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized the importance of providing personalized support to students, especially those facing challenges in reading. The proposed intervention involves offering additional English classes tailored to individual needs. This initiative aims to uplift students’ skills, enabling them to grasp subjects effectively.

He, also highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments, showcasing a model JSS building that represents the future of junior high school education. The building, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as biology labs, chemistry labs, physics labs, computer labs, and a STEM lab, signifies a shift towards a 21st-century learning environment.

The minister clarified that these improvements were not limited to new schools but also extended to existing ones. He presented a visual representation of a high school that has undergone significant upgrades, providing students with modern amenities for enhanced learning experiences.

Acknowledging challenges in the education system, Dr. Adutwum debunked claims of neglecting basic schools, stating that comprehensive rehabilitation efforts were underway.

He revealed that funding from the World Bank was being utilized to rehabilitate approximately 100 schools, emphasizing the need for consolidation and modernization.

As part of the government’s vision for education, the minister unveiled plans for a public school, named STEM Academy, which will cater to students from kindergarten to senior high school. The facility, set to open in East Legon, reflects a commitment to quality public education, challenging the notion that only private schools offer such standards.

Dr. Adutwum expressed confidence that these initiatives would not only improve learning outcomes but also position Ghana competitively on the global stage. He urged Ghanaians to embrace the positive changes happening in the education sector, emphasizing the transformative impact on socioeconomic fortunes.

The scheduled completion of these projects by January-February 2024 indicates a swift and determined effort to bring about positive change in Ghana’s education landscape.
