EC’s consideration for pegging presidential fee at GH₵100k discriminatory – communication officer fumes

A social communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Nkrumah Abayie Samuel (Oga), has chide and expressed his displeasure to criticise the fee set by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana as the filing fee for the 2020 presidential candidates.
The EC on Monday, September 14, 2020, opened nominations for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections ahead of the December 2020 polls.

In relation to the statement put out by the Electoral Commission, the nominations are to be filed from Monday, October 5, 2020, to Friday, October 9, 2020.
Presidential aspirants are expected to pay GH₵100,000 as filing fee, a 100% increment from the 2016 GH₵50,000, while the parliamentary candidates will have to part away with GH₵10,000 to file for nominations.
Since the announcement, some political commentators and governance think tanks have kicked against the fee set by the EC ahead of the December 7, 2020 polls.

Contributing to a panel discussion on ‘Anɔpa Nkɔmɔ’ on Tain FM, the NDC Deputy Communication officer for Tain district, Mr. Nkrumah (Oga) opined, “the payment of such huge sums for nomination forms is one of the major contributors to corruption in Ghana”, the filing fee for the presidential candidates for the next election is “outrageous” and discriminatory”.
“In 2016, the EC charged GH₵50,000 as filing fees for presidential candidates and GH₵10,000 for parliamentary aspirants, but the EC, led by the former Chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei, consulted IPAC, but what are we experiencing today”. He fumed.
