EDUWATCH has issued a statement on Aburi Girls students’ death and health systems in SHS.

EDUWATCH after hearing the case of the death news of Stacey Okyere, a student of Aburi Girls’, they have come out with some observations and recommendations to improve the health system in SHSs.

Below are the observations and recommendations publicised by Mr. Kofi Asare, the Executive Director at EDUWATCH.

Observation

1. SHS have become communities of up to 6,000 residents. Quality healthcare is a basic need.

2. SHS lack health case management protocols. Discretion is used without protocols. This is subject to personal bias and abuse.

3. It is unacceptable for SHS to call parents to travel and pick sick wards to hospital when one is nearby.

4. The state of sick bays in some SHS is sorry.

5. Even with NHIS, many sick bays sell medicines

Recommendations

1. GES should liaise with GHS to develop a case management protocol for sick students in school.

2. The monitoring of the implementation of the protocols should be mainstreamed into indicators for supervision by the School Inspectors and Key Performance Indicators of school heads.

3. GES should liaise with GHS to ensure sick bays have the required drugs, competent personnel, and basic facilities to function under the NHIS.

4: GHS and GES must make NHIS work in SHS by providing needed drugs.

5. Parent Associations and Old Students must be interested in the state and functioning of health facilities in their schools.

If we don’t do these simple things, nothing will change.
