Former Accra-based Twitter staff receive severance after negotiations

Twitter has finally provided severance payments to its former staff members based in Accra who were laid off without compensation following the acquisition of the social media company by billionaire Elon Musk, according to their legal representatives.

In November 2022, Twitter made the sudden decision to terminate its entire Africa team located in Accra as part of a broader series of job cuts implemented by Musk after his acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion.

The former employees raised concerns that they were made redundant without receiving any severance pay or benefits, which violated Ghana’s labor laws.

Represented by the law firm Agency Seven Seven, the former Twitter staff initiated negotiations with the company to assert their rights to redundancy compensation under Section 65 of Ghana’s Labour Act.

This section stipulates that employers must notify the Chief Labour Officer and engage in settlement discussions prior to conducting mass layoffs.

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 17, Agency Seven Seven announced that it had successfully negotiated a redundancy settlement on behalf of Twitter’s former team in Ghana.

“Agency Seven Seven has effectively led negotiations on behalf of former staff members of Twitter Ghana Ltd in their pursuit of fair settlement and repatriation expenses for foreign staff,” the press release stated.

The legal representatives argued that the payout was crucial to “alleviate the hardships faced by employees when corporations carry out mass redundancy exercises.”
