[VIDEO] ECG disconnects Accra Academy from power grid over debt
Accra Academy Senior High School
The Accra Academy Senior High School (SHS) is currently experiencing a power outage due to disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over alleged unpaid arrears. The school’s teachers have called on the ECG to restore the power supply, expressing concerns for the safety of the students and the potential impact on teaching and learning.
A teacher, who has worked at the school for over 31 years, described the disconnection as the “saddest day” in his career. He said he received a call from a colleague informing him that ECG personnel were on campus to disconnect the school due to outstanding debt.
The teacher stated that the school is not responsible for the payment, and it is the teachers staying on campus who have been affected by the disconnection, as they are on prepaid meters. With approximately 3,000 students currently in school, the teacher expressed worry about the situation and who would be held accountable if any harm befalls the students.

The teacher explained that they appealed to the ECG personnel, who claimed to have been instructed by higher authorities to carry out the disconnection, despite not knowing the exact amount owed.
The school made efforts to prevent the disconnection, but their pleas went unheard. The teacher made an appeal to the leaders of the ECG, highlighting the presence of students in schools and how they should not be subjected to such treatment. He urged the ECG to reconsider their actions and do what is necessary.
Citi News’ Fauzu Masawudu reported that when he arrived at the school around 8:40 pm on Monday 19th February 2024, the entire campus was in darkness, with students resorting to using torchlights in classrooms for studying.
Another anonymous teacher expressed deep concern about the situation, describing it as an unprecedented event in his teaching career. He learned about the arrival of ECG officials from a colleague and their intention to disconnect the power due to outstanding debts.

Despite pleas and attempts at negotiation, the ECG officials, who claimed to be from the head office, remained firm in their directive to disconnect the power supply.
