Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced an emergency holiday for schools in some six (6) Districts/ Municipals/Metropolitans in the Northern Region of Ghana.
In a letter signed by the Northern Regional Director of Education Alhassan Alidu Jnr. (Mr.) said, the holiday is declared for the schools due to the grand durbar for the Ghana Teacher Prize 2022 scheduled for tomorrow, 5th October, 2022.
According to the letter, all schools in the following Districts/ Municipals/ Metropolitans are to be closed.
1. Tamale Metro
2. Sagnarigu Municipal
3. Savelugu Municipal
4. Tolon District
5. Nanton District and
6. Kumbungu District
The Directorate explained that, this will enable all affected teachers to attend this important Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at UDS Multipurpose building, Dungu Campus at exactly 9:00am.

Ghana Teacher Prize, an award scheme instituted to honour outstanding teachers annually is to be held this year in Tamale. At a planning committee meeting held in the month of February, 2022, Tamale was proposed as the venue for this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize. This has subsequently been approved by the Honourable Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
On Friday, April 22, 2022, Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar of NTC led a delegation made up of Miss Grace Agyeman Duah, the National Coordinator of GTP, Mr. Dennis Osei-Owusu, the Public Relations Officer of NTC, Miss Grace Adoma Ababio of Standards and Compliance Department of NTC and Mrs. Rhoda Ohene Tuffour, Budget Officer of NTC to meet with the Northern Regional Education Directorate and the Local Planning Committee (LOC).
GTP is a three-day event which commences from 3rd to 5th of October annually. The first two days are used for symposium and exhibition, the last day, 5th October (World Teachers’ Day) is the climax. The President of the Republic of Ghana is always the Guest of Honour. Dr. Addai-Poku underscored the need for the nation to protect and motivate teachers as teachers are the number one determiner of quality and improved learning outcomes.
A 7 member Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was formed and chaired by the Regional Director of Education, Dr. Peter Attafuah, other members are Alhaji Amuda Kassa, Rev. K.A Odaatu, H.E. Forgor Elizabeth S. Mr. Frederick Owusu all of the Regional Directorate of Education, A representative from the Teacher Unions and a representative from the Regional Coordinating Council.
The Registrar walked the LOC through the Terms of Reference for the various sub-committees, which are Publicity, Event, Sponsorship, Transport and Accommodation. He charged them to give out their all in making this year’s GTP one of the best. The Chairperson, Dr. Peter Attafuah promised the NTC officials of nothing but the best.
The team went round the city of Tamale to inspect facilities for the event.
The event will officially be launched in the month of August, 2022 in Accra. The two-day symposium and exhibition will be held at Modern City Hotel and the grand durbar at the Multi-Purpose Auditorium of University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale.
NTC released top 23 finalists for 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has released the top 23 finalists for 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize.
The 23 finalists were classified under three major categories. These are; Teaching Category, Teacher in Leadership and Administration Category and Non-Teaching Category.
The list was released after the Ministry of Education through the National Teaching Council on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, officially launched the 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize at the Bediako Conference Hall at the GNAT Headquarters in Accra.
The launch was under the theme “the Transformation of Education begins with Teachers”.
The 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize is the 27th edition since its establishment in 1995 and the 5th since its rebranding from Best Teacher Award to Ghana Teacher Prize in 2018 to conform to global standards.
GETFund, a headline sponsor of Ghana Teacher Prize, has through its Administrator, Dr. Richard Ampofo Boadu, pledged to award scholarships to the 23 finalists of the 2022 awardees.
This is the first time such a package is being pledged for the awardees of the rebranded ceremony to reward hard working teaching and non teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service.
The Administrator made this known when the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP, launched the 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize at the GNAT Hall, Accra.
According to him, the overall winner of the 2022 Ghana Teacher Prize Most Outstanding Teacher will be rewarded with a scholarship to study abroad for his or her Master’s or PhD, programme.
The other 22 finalists with will be honoured with local scholarships for a degree or master’s or a PhD programme.
This decision by the Board of Trustees of the Fund is meant to place the teacher at the centre of polices and activities of GETFund.
