Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale has been in the news for the past week lately, with a disturbing video making rounds on social media showing students using toilet cubicles as dormitories. This situation has sparked outrage from both the Ghanaian public and the Ghana Education Service (GES), prompting swift action from the authorities.

In a letter dated 16th April, 2023 with Reference number, GES/PR/RELEASE/88,  GES, had declared 1790 students for enrollment, but only 1467 students have enrolled, leaving the school with excess capacity to even house an extra 300 students. This begs the question of why some students are being forced to sleep in such deplorable conditions.

In response to this situation, the GES has directed the Headmaster and Senior Housemaster of the school to step aside to allow for further investigations into the matter by the Regional Director of Education. The investigation is expected to report back its findings within two weeks.

This development is quite unfortunate, as it paints a picture of neglect and disregard for the welfare of students in the school. The GES wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that it will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of students entrusted to its care.

Also ,Ghana Education Service stated that, it is crucial that schools provide a safe and conducive learning environment for their students, as this is essential to achieving the desired educational outcomes. Students cannot be expected to learn effectively in an environment that is not conducive to their physical and emotional well-being.
