Two suspects, Iddrisu Hardi, also known as Pagaaza, and Mumuni Osman, have been arrested by the police for allegedly attacking Abubakari Sadiq, a presenter at Dagbong Radio Station in Tamale.
The attack took place while Sadiq was hosting a programme on May 3, 2023. The police had previously visited the scene but found that the suspects had fled.
However, with the help of a video footage of the incident, the police were able to apprehend the suspects.
According to a police statement, the suspects are in custody, helping with the investigation and will be brought before a court.
The Ghanaian government has also condemned the attack on the journalist, who was allegedly assaulted by a former regional communications officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement issued on May 4, the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said, “Attacks on journalists should not be countenanced. Severe and speedy response from law enforcement agencies is necessary to prevent copy-cat acts and maintain Ghana’s status in upholding press freedom.”
