GNAT Urges GES to Reinstate GHANASCO Headmaster Immediately

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is being pressed by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to reinstate the headmaster of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale without delay.

Following a viral video showing GHANASCO students using washroom cubicles as dormitories, the Ghana Education Service (GES) directed the headmaster, Douglas Haruna Yakubu, and the school’s senior housemaster to step aside for further investigations. In response, the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, spoke to Citi News and criticized the GES for breaching professional rules of engagement, leading to the demand for the immediate reinstatement of the headmaster

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah said, “The rushed decision to issue a statement interdicting the headmaster and subjecting him to public ridicule, stating that it was a breach of professional conduct and had broken the headmaster’s confidence. He emphasized that the matter should have been thoroughly investigated before any action was taken, and called on the GES to reinstate the headmaster and move forward, as he had inherited the matter rather than created it”.

In addition, he expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s delay in releasing capitation grants for the past two years, which has affected the smooth operation of schools across the country.

According to the General Secretary of GNAT, “the government has not paid capitation grants for more than two years, and interventions for Senior High Schools have been in arrears for over three years, which is a cause for concern”.

The head of GHANASCO, Douglas Haruna Yakubu, claimed that the story was fabricated to damage the school’s reputation. However, journalist Prince Kwame Tamakloe, the individual responsible for the story, maintains that the story was not staged.
