The management of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued an official statement following the collapse of a two-storey building on officers during a firefighting operation.
The Service said in a devastating incident in Westlands, West Legon, Accra, four(4) firefighters were tragically injured when the top floor of a two-storey building, utilized as offices, collapsed on them during a fierce firefighting operation.
The distressing incident occurred in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 24, 2024, as the firefighters from the Legon Fire Station responded to the emergency. As they battled the intense fire, the last floor of the building suddenly gave way, causing it to collapse on the brave first responders.
Among the injured firefighters, two are currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Legon. They were initially referred from Medifem Hospital. The other two officers suffered minor injuries and have already been treated and discharged.
The Chief Fire Officer, visited the injured officers at UGMC, Legon, this morning. He assured them of the full support of the management towards their swift and complete recovery.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), led by the Chief Fire Officer, extends heartfelt sympathies to the injured officers, their families, and the entire firefighting fraternity during this difficult time. The safety and well-being of firefighters and citizens remain top priorities for the GNFS.
Management has initiated a thorough investigation into the building collapse at Westlands. A dedicated team has been assembled to probe the circumstances that led to the fire incident and subsequent collapse.
