Government lauds media for contribution to national development

The government has commended the media for their pivotal role in promoting national development. In a statement released by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah to mark World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, May 3, the government expressed appreciation for the media’s significant contributions to Ghana’s progress.

The theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights.” The government’s statement emphasized the need for a stronger focus on economic rights in light of recent global challenges.

“The media has played a critical role in drawing attention to various rights that require greater focus to ensure their full enjoyment,” the statement read. “By highlighting instances of rights abuse by certain sections of society, the media has contributed to redress in many cases. We urge the media to remain steadfast in this endeavor.”

He also statement that despite progress, access to economic rights remains incomplete, particularly in the wake of recent global economic challenges. The government therefore called on the media to increase their efforts to ensure that all citizens have full access to their economic rights.

While encouraging the media to continue to shine a spotlight on all human rights, “we urge them to pay even greater attention to realizing the economic rights of our citizens,” he added

The government’s recognition of the media’s contribution to national development is a significant endorsement of the crucial role the media plays in promoting accountability, transparency and good governance.
